Description:
The Delta Game (aka "Delta Skelta") is a "serious game" that we made during a summer internship at the USGS (United States Geological Survey). It's purpose was to demonstrate how computer games can be used to simulate real life policy decisions.
This game is based loosely on the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, a water system that provides drinking water to approx. two out of every three Californians. The Delta's future, however, is not looking so clean. Sea level rise threatens the aging levee system, and a major earthquake in the area could be devastating not only for the millions living in the Delta, but also for most of California.
The game is split into "planning phases" in which you're allowed to make major decisions, and "real-time," in which you view events in real-time and respond to them. Use your mouse to click on "regions" to make changes in policy and zoning. Click on "levees" to upgrade and repair them. Click on the "indicators" dial to see how you stand with various advocacy groups.
NOTE: This game is a barebones demonstration, and will be somewhat confusing without some background in the problem.
